My heart is breaking, but I can’t even imagine how Fayden is feeling as I step off his porch, the rain trying to beat me into the ground. I stare out at the waves, and watch the whitecaps. The storm above is nothing compared to the one inside me.

Matthew’s hand on my back feels toxic, especially after what just happened between Fayden and me. I still can’t believe what we did—how he made me feel—but what I really can’t believe is that I’m leaving him.

But what choice do I have?

I already know what my parents will do if I walk out on Matthew, and by extension, them. They’ll cut me off, with the intention of making me come back to them, and they’ll make sure I never speak to Heather again.

I know this, but Fayden does not.

He must hate me, I think as Matthew leads me over to the tow truck and helps me inside. I’m barely even aware of what I’m doing as I slide in and take a seat. He gets in beside me and shouts something to Justin before slamming the door.

He says something to me, but I zone it out. He repeats it again, but I’m not listening. Finally, he pinches me hard on the arm, breaking me out of my thoughts.

“What?” I snap.

I feel broken. This isn’t what a strong girl should be doing. I should be telling Matthew to go fuck himself and that I’m staying with Fayden, where I want to be.

“Wow, you must really like him,” Matthew almost laughs as he looks at me. “I’ve never seen your eyes filled with such fire.”

It’s never been more clear to me than now that Matthew doesn’t really care about me—at least not any more than a man cares about his new car. He owns me, with my parents blessing, and he’s proud of it. I’m just a way to get in with my father and his company.

The tow truck driver gets in and starts to pull away. I close my eyes and see the rest of my life playing out in front of me. My parents will want grandkids, and Matthew will want children, which means I’ll be expected to provide them, which means I’ll have to…

Ugh.

I can’t even think about doing that with him. I’d been ready to give myself to Fayden back there, and he’d been more than ready to take me, but the thought of Matthew pressing any part of his body against mine has me ready to throw up.

“You’ll be taking us to the hotel, right?” Matthew asks the driver.

“It’s just up the hill here,” he replies with a nod, his voice raspy and thick.

“Not a dive is it?”

“No, sir,” the man replies. Matthew takes the comment at face value, but I can’t help but feel like the sir had a little bit of an edge to it.

“You really must have wanted those lobsters,” Matthew whispers to me. I choose to ignore him, but he persists. “Who told you that
